Value Stream

Optimized process steps that add value. Smoothed inventory flow and minimized work-in-progress (WIP). Enhanced communication channels. Value-Adding and Non-Value-Adding Activities VSM distinguishes between value-adding (VA) and non-value-adding (NVA) activities. Value-adding activities are steps the customer is willing to pay for, while non-value-adding activities are sources of waste that need to be minimized or eliminated. This classification helps teams focus on what truly benefits the customer and reduces unnecessary tasks. Flow Metrics Common flow metrics recorded in VSM include: Cycle Time (CT): Time required to complete each process step. Lead Time (LT): Total time taken from order to delivery. Uptime: The operational availability of each machine or workstation. Inventory Levels: Amount of raw materials, WIP, or finished goods at each stage.

The Value Stream Mapping Process

Define the Product or Process to Map Select a specific product, service, or process to focus on in the value stream map. Define the start and end points of the process. Map the Current State Document each step, process, and communication flow involved in the current production or service process. Include all relevant flow metrics, such as cycle times, inventory, and wait times, to visualize the end-to-end flow. Identify Waste and Bottlenecks Analyze the current state map to identify areas of waste, bottlenecks, delays, and non-value-adding activities. Focus on points where improvements could make the process smoother, faster, and more efficient. Design the Future State Map Based on insights from the current state analysis, create a future state map that incorporates improvements. Consider lean practices such as continuous flow, pull systems, and takt time to streamline the process, reduce waste, and enhance value creation. Develop an Action Plan Create an action plan for implementing the changes outlined in the future state map. Assign tasks, set deadlines, and identify metrics to measure the effectiveness of each improvement. Implement and Evaluate Put the action plan into effect and monitor results. Evaluate the process to ensure the future state improvements achieve the desired outcomes, such as reduced lead times and minimized waste.
