Throughput Time

Throughput Time is the total elapsed time for one unit of work to travel through a process, from the moment it enters to the moment it exits as finished output. It is closely related to lead time but usually measured at the process level rather than the customer-order level.

What It Includes

All the time between raw material entering the first station and finished good leaving the last: cycle time at each station, transport between stations, waiting in queues, inspection, packaging. Value-adding time is a subset, usually a small one, and the rest is the waste that throughput time exposes.

Why It's a Useful Diagnostic

Comparing throughput time to the sum of value-adding cycle times immediately shows how much waste is embedded in the flow. A process where cycle times total 30 minutes but throughput time is 3 days has 99.3% of its lead time in waiting. That number is the size of the improvement opportunity.

Reducing It

Smaller batches shorten queues. Balanced cycle times prevent bottlenecks. Cellular layouts eliminate transport. Pull scheduling prevents overproduction. Setup reduction enables the small batches to be economical. Each lean intervention ultimately shows up as shorter throughput time, because each removes waiting time somewhere in the flow.

Conclusion

Throughput time is the elapsed-time version of a process, how long the customer actually waits, not how long the work actually takes. Measured honestly and shortened deliberately, it is one of the most powerful improvement targets a factory can pursue.
