SIPOC is a high-level process mapping tool that captures Suppliers, Inputs, Process, Outputs and Customers on a single page. It is often the first artifact created at the start of an improvement project because it frames the boundaries of what is being improved before anyone dives into detailed analysis.
Suppliers: who provides the inputs. Inputs: what materials, information or signals the process consumes. Process: the four to seven high-level steps that transform inputs into outputs. Outputs: what the process produces. Customers: who receives the outputs. Everything fits on one page, that constraint forces clarity.
Improvement projects fail when the team can't agree on where the process starts and ends. SIPOC creates that agreement before analysis begins. It also surfaces the true customers, often multiple, and the true suppliers, which prevents optimizing the wrong section of the value stream.
Start with the process, the four to seven big steps, not the detailed procedure. Then work outward: what does each step need (inputs), where does that come from (suppliers), what does it produce (outputs), who receives that (customers). Build it as a team so the shared understanding is genuine, not one person's interpretation.
