A Pitch Board is a visual board that displays pitch-by-pitch production targets alongside actual output, updated in real time as each pitch interval closes. It is the operational cousin of the hour-by-hour board and one of the most effective tools for hourly production management.
A row for each pitch interval across the shift. Target output for each pitch. Actual output as it happens. A running cumulative variance. Space for the team to write the reason when actual differs from target. The board is placed at the workstation and updated by the operator or team leader as each pitch closes.
A shift target is an abstraction, you know if you missed it at the end. A pitch target is immediate, you know within 15 or 30 minutes. When actual falls behind, the team can respond while the shift is still recoverable, not after it is lost. When a reason is captured for every miss, the accumulated data becomes the raw material for problem-solving.
Pitch boards work only when they are updated honestly and reviewed daily. Team leaders review missed pitches as part of the morning huddle. Recurring reasons become improvement targets. Missed pitches without a captured reason are the strongest signal that the discipline is slipping.
The pitch board turns the shift from a black box into a visible sequence of small commitments. It creates the short feedback loop that operational stability depends on, and it produces the data that continuous improvement feeds on.
