The Eight Categories
Defects: producing scrap, rework or errors that must be corrected. Overproduction: making more, sooner or faster than the next process actually needs, the worst waste, because it hides all the others. Waiting: operators, machines or material standing idle between steps. Non-utilized Talent: failing to engage the knowledge, ideas and skills of the people doing the work. Transport: unnecessary movement of material between locations. Inventory: raw material, work-in-progress or finished goods held beyond what flow requires. Motion: unnecessary movement of people, reaching, walking, searching. Extra Processing: doing more to a product than the customer values or the specification requires.
